Why it’s important to have an up-to-date Will

It’s important you keep your Will up to date. This is so you can ensure your money and possessions go to those you intend to receive them after you pass away. You should regularly review your Will to ensure it still reflects your current personal circumstances. It is recommended to review your Will every three to five years.

If you die without making a Will at all, you will be classed as dying ‘intestate’ and the people or causes that are close to you may not receive anything.

If you wish to leave a gift in your Will to DEBRA, it is incredibly easy to do, whether you are writing a new Will, or updating an existing Will.

Our promise to you

  • We will never ask you about the size or type of gift because every gift means we can provide ongoing support to those living with EB.
  • We understand that you may need to update your Will if your circumstances change.
  • We promise to use your gift wisely and in line with your wishes.

How to leave a gift in your Will

Getting started

When writing or updating your Will, we recommend using a solicitor or professional Will writer. We can’t recommend a particular solicitor, but you can find one via The Law Society.

You can also write your Will for FREE with our free Will writing service.

We strongly recommend that before making a Will, you have a list of your assets with an idea of how you would like them to be divided.

Types of gift and what is right for you

There are three ways to leave a gift in your Will, however the two most common are:

  • A share of your estate. This could be anything from 1%-99%.
  • A specific amount of money - it's worth remembering that inflation means that the value of your gift will go down over time.

Whichever way you choose to leave a gift to DEBRA will positively impact the lives of those with EB. Your solicitor can guide you on which way is right for you. They’ll also be able to advise you on the specific wording.
