Team DEBRA's Great Altesch Glacier Trek

Mosimann’s, Switzerland Travel Centre and Aletsch Arena support a unique glacier trek to raise funds for DEBRA Nurses, 10 - 13 July 2019.

Nine DEBRA participants joined Mark Mosimann on this truly unique trek across the largest glacier in Switzerland. Team DEBRA (including Anton Edelmann - chef, cookery writer and television cook, who was maître chef des cuisines at The Savoy Hotel for over 20 years), enjoyed a trek of a lifetime across the largest glacier in Switzerland - The Great Aletsch Glacier - the 14 mile river of ice is a magical place and not for the faint hearted.  This longest glacier in the Alps stretches from the southern side of the Jungfrau and into the Upper Rhone valley.

With an early start from Wengen, the team took the mountain railway to the top of the Jungfraujoch (3,454m) where the adventure began.  Following safety demonstrations, harnesses, hooks, clips, ropes and crampons, the team were ready to tackle this mighty natural wonder and their home for the next two days.

They then undertook a four hour glacier hike to the Konkordia Hut (2850m).  As they approached their mountain hut they faced a 50m staircase bolted to the side of the mountain and no choice other than to climb it - some say one of the most daunting parts of the trip (the stair case is rebuilt each year due the melting Glacier!). On arrival hungry trekkers were welcomed with plentiful food and drink for an overnight stay.

An early start to watch the sunrise a once in a lifetime experience, then progressed with a six hour tough hike along the middle moraine of the glacier.  Looking at the glacier from various vantage points the moraine can look like a small line of rocks and the glacier itself, smooth and serene. Up close however the crevasses are like canyons, the meltwater streams are like raging rivers, and the rocks are actually boulders the size of pick-up trucks. It is a beautiful and awe inspiring place but one wrong foot and the rope and the team would have had do their bit for each other. They then joined the Alpine Trail to Fiescheralp in the Aletsch Arena - it is at this point that there was a culinary surprise waiting for Team DEBRA, kindly provided by Mosimann’s.
