DEBRA appoints new Director of Research

Dr Hussain joins DEBRA on 25th January to lead the charity’s research strategy, funding pioneering research to help alleviate the symptoms but ultimately find a cure.

Prior to joining DEBRA, Dr Hussain worked at the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), where he delivered their most successful research initiative; psoriasis patient registry (BADBIR). It is now the world’s largest psoriasis specific patient register involving approximately 20,000 patients, 10 pharmaceutical companies and 165 dermatology centres throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Through BADBIR, he raised the profile of psoriasis amongst scientists and clinical researchers.

Tony Byrne, CEO at DEBRA said:
“We are delighted Sagair is joining DEBRA.  Funding pioneering research is a vital part of our work, along with providing specialist healthcare and support for people with EB.  Sagair brings many years of experience, both as a Medical Researcher from world-leading research institutions and as Director of Research with leading dermatology charity British Association of Dermatologists, managing multi-million pound research programmes involving academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies and NHS Trusts. I know he will do an outstanding job in working with the research and EB communities to develop our strategy for EB research.”

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Sagair Hussain said:

“I am delighted to be taking up the role of Director of Research and working with the team at DEBRA. I am looking forward to helping the charity continue the amazing work it does to support pioneering research and to raise the profile of EB amongst the researchers and pharmaceutical industry to not only help alleviate the symptoms but ultimately find a cure. “
