Dr Martinez Recognised for Life Changing Care

Dr Anna Martinez, Consultant EB Dermatologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, has been nominated for the Sun’s Who Cares Wins Award for Best Doctor for providing “life changing” care to children suffering from EB.

DEBRA Member Maisy Keetch, 13, from Rotherhithe, South London, who has EB, nominated Dr Martinez for the award, which is now in its second year.

Mum, Amy, said: “We are always at Great Ormond Street but Dr Martinez does everything she can to ease her condition. She once bought Maisy some special make-up to cheer her up. Maisy lives in constant pain.  Bandaging her so her skin doesn’t come into contact with anything can take three hours every day.”

Amy, who believes Dr Martinez has changed Maisie’s life, added: “She speaks to Maisie on her level and explains everything in a way we can understand. She’s considerate and gentle – we adore her. When not treating patients she is planning clinical trials for new treatments which could eliminate the condition.”

Dr Martinez said: “She has one of the most severe types of EB. I’m humbled by how she and Amy deal with it. She doesn’t let her condition define her and it’s a privilege to be part of her journey.

“I hope that very soon a new treatment will mean Maisie’s condition isn’t so severe.”

We’re delighted that Dr Martinez‘s exemplary work has been recognised!

Dr Martinez is currently working with Prof. Jemma Mellerio and Mrs Elizabeth Pillay on a DEBRA funded research project to develop ways of measuring the effectiveness of potential treatments, a crucial factor in determining the outcome of clinical trials for EB.

We also work in partnership with the NHS to provide care and support to the EB Community at Centres of Excellence in EB across UK, including Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Without your support, these services simply wouldn’t happen.

Please give now to ensure we can carry on providing care and support to the EB Community and funding research into effective treatments and a cure for EB.

Award winners will be announced tomorrow Tuesday, 9 October. Watch this space!
