Sporting Challenge Helps Fund EB Nurses

DEBRA’s thirteenth annual DEBRA Sporting Challenge raised over £25,000 for DEBRA, helping to fund vital care, support and research for the EB Community, including specialist EB nurses across the UK.

On 14 September 2018, 90 dedicated and enthusiastic guests gathered to #FightEB, forming 21 teams for an action packed morning of clay shooting at the prestigious Holland & Holland Shooting Grounds, followed by a charity auction and lunch.

DEBRA works in partnership with the NHS to offer an enhanced healthcare service to children and adults suffering from EB, and funds up to 25% of the salary of EB nurses at four centres of excellence across the country – Great Ormond Street Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital in London, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Solihull Hospital.

Specialist EB Nurse Jane Clapham explained what a difference funding from DEBRA makes:

“Funding from DEBRA is fundamental to what we do. Many people are aware of the role DEBRA plays in funding research to improve the lives of those living with EB, but less well known is the ongoing support provided by DEBRA to the nursing service. Without funding from DEBRA the nursing teams would not be able to offer the same comprehensive service to our patients.

Living with this lifelong complex multi system condition can, in its severe forms, result in daily pain which is unimaginable to most of us. People with EB have a daily battle to maintain their health, to manage their wounds, eat well, and attend many hospital appointments, but they have the same dreams and aspirations as anyone else.

The funding from DEBRA enables EB nurses to make life easier for people suffering from EB. We are able to spend time with patients in their own homes, train their carers, and help young adults enjoy a fun filled weekend each year to give them and their families a much needed break, educating other healthcare professionals about EB, and sadly all too often end of life support and then bereavement to support to their families.

These are all things the NHS struggles to provide – without DEBRA they would not be possible.”

DEBRA would like to thank the many generous sponsors, event partners and supporters who came together to make this event possible: Holland and Holland for providing an excellent venue, chef Mark Hix for providing a delicious lunch, Chapel Down for generously donating wines to enjoy with the meal and the many individuals and companies who donated wonderful prizes, including once-in-a-lifetime experiences, for the charity auction on the day.

Once again we thank our event partners.  Each partner contributes in their own way, but all are crucial in terms of making our Sporting Challenge a success and we would like thank them all individually.

Join in the next Sporting Challenge, on 8 May to #FightEB – team places are now available.
