DEBRA Member Daisy Pearson shortlisted for Young Fundraiser of the Year Award!

DEBRA Member Daisy Pearson (12) from Holt in North Norfolk has been shortlisted for the Young Fundraiser of the Year Award by the National Institute of Fundraising.

Daisy’s EB mainly affects her hands and feet and isn’t always visible to the naked eye. The condition causes constant pain, particularly when the weather is warmer or she has to walk any distance. She’s determined not to let this daily challenge stop her fundraising with her local community. Every penny Daisy is raising could help provide care and support to the EB Community or fund vital research into effective treatments and ultimately a cure for the condition.

Daisy has been fundraising to fight EB for 10 years, with the support of her family. Daisy first started fundraising for DEBRA 2008 when a tabletop sale at the Holt Community Centre raised £30. Since then Daisy, and her family, have organised hundreds of table top sales and the North Norfolk community have really taken the family to their hearts, raising a huge amount of awareness of EB.

Daisy’s mum says: “The local community have been brilliant in their support for Daisy’s fundraising. Over the years we have been helped by local Rotary Clubs, local schools and businesses. We have clever ladies who knit and sew the most wonderful crafts for us to sell too.”

Dad Michael adds: “Over the years Daisy and her brother Joseph have become more and more involved – raising money and awareness of the condition. We had never heard of EB or DEBRA before having Daisy, but now we have certainly raised the awareness of EB in the local community. There are not many weeks that pass without us holding a stall for DEBRA.”

Now there are not many people in Daisy’s North Norfolk community that don’t know about EB. She recently started secondary school and the transition was greatly helped by the fact that many of her classmates were already aware of EB because of the work she and her family have done. Many of her classmates now #FightEB and support DEBRA too.

In June last year, Daisy’s fundraising total reached an incredible total of £50,000 – all thanks to her personal persistence and the support of friends, family and her local community.

Director of Fundraising and Communications at DEBRA, Hugh Thompson, says: “This is a remarkable story of sheer determination and the power of taking the first step. I think it just shows what can happen when you unite a local community. Together we fight EB and together we can beat EB.”

Thank you Daisy – we hope you win!
