Professor Jemima Mellerio gives Inaugural Lecture at Kings College London

DEBRA would like to congratulate Professor Jemima Mellario on her recent Professorship.

Professor Jemima Mellerio is the Honorary Professor of Paediatric Dermatology at King's College London and Consultant Dermatologist at Guy's and St Thomas' (GSTT) and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. She is the Clinical Research Fellow at St John's Institute of Dermatology where she first encountered patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). After completing her MD thesis in Genotype-Phenotype Correlation in EB Professor Mellerio has continued to work on gene discovery for novel forms of EB. She also leads the Paediatric and Genetic Dermatology Service, as well as the nationally commissioned Adult EB Service at GSTT, promoting holistic multidisciplinary care for paediatric and adult skin disorders, rare disease clinical trials, teaching and training.

During her inaugural lecture, Professor Mellerio described how an increased understanding in the molecular mechanisms underlying EB has improved clinical practice, prognostication and genetic counselling, and has enabled prenatal genetic testing. She explained how these advances are leading to clinical trials of novel treatments including cell and gene therapy, and how knowledge about the natural history of disease is essential to inform clinical study design.
