Become a trustee

What does the role involve?

Trustees carry significant responsibilities personally. They need to be able to attend and participate in meetings so that they can fulfil these responsibilities on behalf of DEBRA and its members.

All candidates should read the Trustees’ Handbook which gives detailed information about the duties of trustees (available on request from Dawn Jarvis – details below) prior to confirming their application.

How much time does this involve?

Candidates should be prepared to allow approximately 10 to 12 days per year to attend board or committee meetings, training and attending fundraising and other events. More time is taken up in extensive reading and preparation for these meetings. The more time and effort you put in the more effective you will be in the role of trustee.

Expenses incurred through attending meetings, including costs of a carer (if required) and appropriate training, will be provided at no cost to the individual.

How do I apply to become a trustee?

If you or another DEBRA Member within your household wish to stand for election to the Board of Trustees at DEBRA’s Annual General Meeting, you should complete the nomination form below. If you know somebody who is not a DEBRA Member who would be interested in becoming a trustee and they have the skills we need, we would be very happy to talk to them about trusteeship or the possibility of joining a DEBRA committee.

Candidates will require one DEBRA Member to nominate them and a second Member to support their application. All nominations received will be considered by the Nominations and Governance Committee. Candidates will then be expected to attend an informal meeting with an existing Member of the Nominations and Governance Committee and DEBRA’s Chief Executive before they are put forward for possible election at the AGM.

Please call Dawn Jarvis, Company Secretary on 01344 771961 if you have any questions regarding the process of becoming a trustee.

What happens next?

Completed application forms should be returned to us by post (freepost, RTJJ–AKBR–UHGY, DEBRA, The Capitol Building, Oldbury, Bracknell, Berkshire, RG12 8FZ) or emailed to by Tuesday 5th January 2021. Wherever possible, application forms should be typewritten. However, if the candidate does not have access to a computer a handwritten form is fine.

Both nominating Members should email confirmation that they have nominated the candidate or confirm this in writing by post to Dawn Jarvis.

All Members will receive a second mailing containing ballot papers and information about the candidates prior to an AGM being held.
