Dr Sagair Hussain leads our research at DEBRA UK, bringing over 25 years of experience in medical research and a deep commitment to improving the lives of people living with EB. With a PhD in Molecular Biology, an MSc in Genetics, and an Executive MBA, Sagair blends scientific expertise with strategic vision to drive meaningful change.

Before joining DEBRA, he served as Director of Research at the British Association of Dermatologists, where he championed skin research across the UK. His career has spanned leading academic institutions, biotech, and data science—giving him a unique, innovative perspective on how to turn cutting-edge science into real-world solutions.

In addition to his role at DEBRA, Sagair is also the Secretary/Treasurer for the Dermatology Council of England, where he helps shape the future of dermatology research and care nationwide.

Sagair is passionate about ensuring that research leads to real impact—better treatments, better care, and ultimately, a cure for EB.

DEBRA Research Grants Manager, Dr Abi Witherden

Dr Abi Witherden manages our research grants awards process at DEBRA. From an early taste of research during her undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, through a PhD at Imperial College and a decade of molecular biology research in top London Universities, Abi brings extensive experience and understanding of academic research to DEBRA.

Before joining DEBRA, Abi spent six years championing public patient involvement within the NHS. She chaired the South Tees Maternity Voices Partnership during the COVID-19 pandemic and represented service user voice across North East England for the North East and North Cumbria Local Maternity and Neonatal System.

Abi is deeply committed to ensuring that EB research delivers tangible benefits to the people who need it most.  She is passionate about hearing and valuing the voices of families living with EB, ensuring that their experiences shape and drive DEBRA’s research priorities.
