Can I apply for PIP online?

Expand

PIP cannot be applied for online. You must call the relevant agencies to start your PIP claim. If you are eligible, you will then be mailed a printed form to complete and return by post. To start your PIP claim, please call:

England, Scotland and Wales – 0800 917 2222
Northern Ireland – 0800 012 1573

Can I apply if I have a mild type of EB?

Expand

Yes, you can. PIP allowance is awarded based on how your condition affects you in your daily living and/or your mobility, not on the general presentation of the condition itself. People living with EB are affected in different ways so making it clear what the impact of your EB is, regardless of the type or severity is key to a successful outcome.

Contact your DEBRA Community Support Manager about your eligibility and individual circumstances.

Can my DEBRA Community Support Manager speak to agencies on my behalf?

Expand

Only the person claiming PIP is able to speak directly with an agency; however, you can give consent for your DEBRA Community Support Manager to communicate with the agency on your behalf, as long as you are also present on the call.

Even if you do not wish for your DEBRA Community Support Manager to speak on your behalf, they will still be able to help in other ways.

How do I make a complaint about my PIP application?

Expand

If you are unhappy with the way your claim has been handled (e.g. long delays or lost forms rather than the decision made), you should contact the PIP enquiry line:

England, Scotland and Wales – 0800 121 4433
Northern Ireland – 0800 587 0932

If you are not satisfied with their response, you will be asked if you want your complaint to be sent to a Complaint Resolution Manager; your complaint should be reviewed within 15 working days.

If you are still unhappy, you can ask for an Independent Case Examiner to review your case and complaint. This service is free of charge and impartial.

How long will it take to complete the PIP2 form?

Expand

We recommend you set aside at least two hours to complete the PIP2 form in detail. This can be done in one sitting, though the content in the form can be heavy and force you to deal with intense feelings and emotions so it's ok to take regular breaks.

If you would like support to complete the form – practical or emotional – please contact your DEBRA Community Support Manager.

What if I have a change in circumstances?

Expand

A change in circumstance can impact your eligibility to PIP allowance. You should always notify the DWP/DfC of your change in circumstance; however, there is a possibility that your PIP allowance rate could be lowered.

You should notify the DWP/DfC of a change in circumstance for the following:

  • Hospital stay – if you are 18 or over and your hospital stay exceeds 28 days you will no longer be eligible for either component of a PIP allowance; if you are under 18 when you enter hospital, your PIP allowance will continue no matter the time spent in hospital
  • Stay in a care home – if your stay exceeds 28 days you will no longer be eligible for the daily living component of PIP allowance (unless your stay is fully self-funded)
  • Move to hospice – PIP allowance will generally continue if you are terminally ill and in hospice care
  • Imprisoned – this may affect your eligibility for PIP allowance

Note: Any stays separated by less than 28 days are added together when determining if PIP allowance may stop. For example, if you spend:

  • 7 days in a hospital
  • then move back home for 7 days
  • then move to a care home for 20 days

= 34 days so your PIP allowance will normally stop.

Will PIP affect other benefits I receive?

Expand

Applying for PIP allowance will not reduce other benefits. In fact, it may increase the amount(s) you are entitled to in other benefit awards. You can find information about entitlements and concessions relating to PIP, or contact your DEBRA Community Support Manager about your individual circumstances.
