Charity golf day with Ian Wright at Sunningdale Golf Club
A charity golf day with football hero and TV personality Ian Wright has raised £10,000 for Crowthorne-based charity, DebRA, which supports individuals and families affected by the painful genetic skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).
The Wrighty Golf Day for DebRA, held at Sunningdale Golf Club on Tuesday 23rd October, saw eleven teams tee off at 9.00am following a shotgun start. Afterwards, players enjoyed a roast lunch before prizes were issued to teams and individual players. A fundraising auction also took place with lots including a bottle of champagne signed by Peter Alliss, a framed signed picture of the Chelsea 1971 European Cup winners, an evening with Jonathan Ross and rounds of golf at Woolston Manor Golf and Country Club, Woburn Golf Club, Hindhead Golf Club and Berkshire Golf Club.
There are currently at least 5,000 people living with EB, which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously, in the UK.
EB has a number of distinct forms: at its mildest, blistering is confined to the hands and feet. In more severe cases, the whole body is affected and wounds heal very slowly, giving rise to scarring, physical deformity and significant disability. Blistering can also affect inner body linings, such as the mouth and oesophagus and, in its most advanced form, EB can be fatal in infancy.
Founded in 1978, DebRA provides an expert team of nurses and social care staff to work directly with families affected by EB. The charity also commissions world-leading research into the condition with the aim of finding effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB. Because DebRA receives no government funding, DebRA relies on the generosity of the public to carry out its vital work, improving lives and giving hope.
Heather Chandler, Fundraising Executive - Golf at DebRA, said: “We would like to thank everyone for their generous support. Everyone had a fantastic day and the money raised will ensure DebRA continues its vital work, supporting people affected by EB and funding research to find effective treatments for this distressing condition.
“DebRA boasts the largest charity golf society in the UK with 350 members across the country and organises over twenty prestigious golf days each year. If you would like to take part in one of our golf days, we would love to hear from you.”
