Berkshire Businessman to tackle North Pole Marathon

12 March 2007

North Pole Adventurer set to raise thousands for DebRA

Patrick WallerBerkshire Businessman Patrick Waller is competing in one of the most extreme marathons in the world in aid of DebRA.

Patrick, 49, of Windlesham, founded the Financial Planning Partnership in Wellington Business Park, Crowthorne.

He will take part in the treacherous North Pole Marathon in April.

The North Pole Marathon is in its third year and attracts adventurers from around the world to race the 26.2mile race on ice.

It is the world's coldest marathon with the temperature dropping as low as -30 degrees.

Patrick will be embarking on the challenge with his friend Miles Cudmore, of Sunningdale.

They have been training since the end of 2006 and hope to complete the race in just over six hours.

Although Patrick is an experienced marathon runner, with eight marathons including London and New York under his belt, this event will be a real challenge for him.

Neither man has raced on ice before but recent snow dumps have given them the chance to try out running in snow shoes.

Patrick aims to raise a substantial amount of money for DebRA, whose head office is also in Wellington Business Park. He has set up a fundraising page so that people can sponsor him easily.

Miles is raising money for Care International, which works in 70 countries fighting poverty and injustice.

Patrick said: "After watching a television documentary about the work of DebRA I was inspired to raise money to support their work with families living with EB.

"This race is going to be really tough but we are both determined to do well. Raising money for our charities will make the challenge even more worthwhile."
