Crowthorne based charity DebRA celebrates Mad Hatter Week
Last Thursday (21st June 2007), staff and volunteers from DebRA’s head office and shop in Crowthorne celebrated Ascot Ladies Day in fine style to support the charity’s Mad Hatter Week. Workers donned an array of colourful hats, many of which were kindly supplied by Crowthorne-based fancy dress hire shop, Bewitched, for the day free of charge.
Mad Hatter Week is a UK-wide fundraising campaign that encourages organisations, groups and individuals to get sponsored to wear their silliest or favourite hats for one day, raising funds for DebRA’s vital work.
DebRA is the only charity in the UK for people affected by the skin blistering condition EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) - a genetic condition in which the skin and internal membranes blister at the slightest friction or even spontaneously. It affects around 5,000 children and adults in the UK and approximately 500,000 worldwide.
DebRA’s network of shops is a major part of its fundraising activity and helps the charity to provide a nursing and welfare service, and commission world-leading research into effective treatments. The DebRA shop at 188 Dukes Ride, Crowthorne is open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday and sells a large range of bric-a-brac, clothing, books, furniture, household items and accessories.
John Dart, Director of DebRA, said: “Mad Hatter Week is a fun way to help EB families whose lives have been turned upside down by this devastating condition. We had a lot of fun on the day and are delighted so many people across the UK made the effort to don their hats for Mad Hatter Week this year.”
DebRA organises various fundraising activities throughout the year and further details are available at www.debra.org.uk.
