Runners raise an estimated £10,000 for DebRA at this year’s Great South Run

05 November 2007

A team of 45 runners have raised an estimated £10,000 for DebRA by completing the recent BUPA Great South Run in Portsmouth.

DebRA is the national charity working on behalf of individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a rare genetic condition which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously.

The race is Britain's leading 10-mile running event covering a fast, flat route and starts and finishes on the seafront in Southsea. It is one of the most popular events for runners wishing to support DebRA, which funds research into EB and also provides practical support for EB families. EB is fatal in the most severe cases but even in its mildest form it causes lifelong disability and pain.

Andrew Colville, Senior Events Manager at DebRA, said: “We thank everyone who took part in this year’s Great South Run and helped raise this tremendous amount of money for DebRA. Despite the wet and windy weather, which made the last two miles a really tough challenge, our runners stepped up to the plate and we’re very grateful for their efforts. The money raised will help improve the lives of the 5,000 children and adults living with EB in the UK.”

DebRA organises a range of fundraising runs, marathons and treks for people of all abilities and would welcome your support.
