HRH The Countess of Wessex presents prizes at Duke of Edinburgh Cup 2007

DebRA, in association with International Golf for Youth Limited, was delighted to be joined by HRH The Countess of Wessex, at this year’s Duke of Edinburgh Cup 2007, which took place at Bearwood Lakes Golf Club in Sindlesham on Monday 11th June.

The Countess of Wessex then met with representatives from DebRA, the only charity in the UK that supports and cares for people affected by the skin condition EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa), and Dean Anderson who lives with EB.

Twenty-six year-old Dean has a severe type of EB called Recessive Dystrophic EB, which means his skin is as fragile as a butterfly wing and blisters and breaks at the slightest touch. Despite living in constant pain, Dean attends mainstream college, where he is working hard to complete a GNVQ Foundation in Art and Design.

As in the past three years, monies raised from the tournament will be divided equally between DebRA and the Duke of Edinburgh Cup charities. This includes £15,000 which was raised at an auction held after the event.

Amanda McLean, Director of Fundraising and Communications at DebRA, said: “This is the third year DebRA has co-hosted this prestigious event and we are delighted so much money was raised on the day. This money will ensure DebRA continues its vital work, supporting people affected by EB and funding research to find effective treatments for this distressing condition.”

Terence Regan, Chairman of Trustees at International Golf for Youth Limited, added: “The day was a great success and we wish to thank everyone involved. All of the 11 events we have world wide this year raise funds to help children and young people”

The top two players from the tournament, winner Tommy Tomkins and runner-up Stuart Cash, will now qualify for the World Finals in Windsor from 1 – 4 October.

DebRA boasts the largest charity golf society in the UK with 350 members across the country and organises over twenty prestigious golf days each year. New members are always welcomed, so if you are interested in any of the events or would like further information about getting involved in DebRA's Golfing Society, please contact Heather Chandler, DebRA’s Fundraising Executive – Golf, on 01344 467784 or visit the DebRA Golfing Society page at www.debra.org.uk/fundraising.
