This Week panel hosts DebRA event

22 June 2006

DebRA is planning its next President’s Evening after a successful city event involving panel members from BBC’s This Week.

Martyn, Diane and MichaelDebRA president Michael Portillo and Diane Abbott MP were joined by presenter Martyn Lewis to recreate the atmosphere of the popular Thursday night political show in front of a 60-strong audience of specially invited guests at The Churchill Hotel, Portland Square, London in June.

The audience consisted of existing members of DebRA’s Appeals Council and guests from the worlds of business, education and the third sector.

The panel started its discussion by addressing Mr Portillo and Ms Abbott’s great relationship.

They revealed they had attended school together and continued by recalling a number of stories about each other from the past.

But serious political issues were also discussed, such as John Prescott’s recent difficulty, the state of the NHS and who would be the next Prime Minister.

Mr Portillo concluded the evening with a presentation on DebRA's work.

The high profile guest list included Argos CEO Terry Duddy, Sir Brian and Lady Burridge and representatives from Halifax and Bank of Scotland (HBOS) and financial firm Investec.

Amanda McLean, DebRA’s Corporate Development Director, said the cultivation event was a real success. She said: “DebRA wants to reach out to new audiences with innovative events as we are actively seeking new members for our Appeals Council.

“This is a fantastic way of achieving our aim whilst giving guests a unique experience.”
