Mad Hatter Week 18th – 24th June 2007

08 June 2007

Wear your silliest or favourite hat and help raise funds for DebRA

Organisations, groups and individuals across the UK are invited to don their hats and raise funds for DebRA, the UK charity for people affected by the skin blistering condition EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) during this year’s Mad Hatter’s Week (18th – 24th June 2007).

Mad Hatter WeekMad Hatter’s Week is a UK-wide fundraising campaign to encourage people to get sponsored to wear their silliest or favourite hats for one day – raising funds for DebRA’s vital work.

Participants are encouraged to raise money by holding an event or wearing their hat to their school or workplace for a suggested fee.

For example, why not hold a pirate's hat ball or a 1920’s gangster theme party, hold a Mad Hatter Tea Party, wear your Ascot hat and run racing sweepstakes with your friends or wear your school or corporate colours.

Laurence Helgesen, Head of Campaigns for DebRA, says: “Royal Ascot is not the only reason to put on a hat! Mad Hatter’s Week is a fun way to help EB families whose lives have been turned upside down by this devastating condition. We’re hoping as many people as possible make the effort to dig out or even create their favourite hat – and enjoy making a real difference to lives across the UK.”

EB is a genetic condition in which the skin and internal membranes blister at the slightest friction or even spontaneously. It affects around 5,000 children and adults in the UK and approximately 500,000 worldwide. Money raised during Mad Hatter’s Week will help fund DebRA’s wide ranging research programmes, specialist nurses and a social welfare team.
