Solo Antarctica - the challenge for DebRA

British Soldier’s record-breaking attempt given Royal approval

It will be the most gruelling expedition of his life but soldier Mark Langridge is determined to become the first person to trek unaided to the South Pole and back – raising money for DebRA in the process.

During the Solo Antarctica expedition, Mark will endeavour to trek 1392 miles over 80 days as he walks to the South Pole and back alone and unaided. This is something that has never previously been attempted or completed.

Solo Antarctica has already received backing from HRH Prince Charles who has agreed to act as Patron and Mark hopes the challenge will raise a substantial amount of money for DebRA, in addition to raising the charity’s profile throughout the expedition. Money will also go to Cancer Research UK and The British Heart Foundation.

Mark was born and lives in Surrey. He joined the first battalion The Parachute Regiment in 1986 where he served for ten years and he is still serving in the regular army today.

At the end of 2008 Mark hopes to achieve a world-first by completing this ambitious expedition. He will leave the UK in mid-October to begin his trek on 1st November.

The soldier is currently working on his fitness levels to ensure they are in peak condition – a prerequisite for a record-breaking attempt of this nature.

Mark has gained extensive ‘cold weather experience’ during several winter tours of Norway on NATO exercises, as well as operating in mountainous areas in other countries.
